Welcome to our October issue of
" Slow Travel for Women " Newsletter
October is the season for pumpkins and various winter squash that come into season with the changing of the leaves. This October 2008 brings us mixed feelings of joy and uncertainty regarding the global economic situation present in most countries. In spite of all this, we must keep looking ahead in a positive way, and keep smiling together with our pumpkins!

The
Directors of Slow Travel for Women,
Ann Marinelli and Muriel Theriault, are busy working on new tours for the coming season.
We are pleased to inform you that the New England Tour will be repeated again next October 2009 due to popular demand.
All of our tours are unique and are designed with our “Slow Travel” philosophy in mind. We try to interweave cultural and historical visits, gastronomic experiences, walks enjoyed in natural settings and moments of pure indulgence.
Now is the time to sign-up for our New York shopping tour, as well as our European Christmas market tour. Space is limited and hotels are holding the best rooms for us.
Our tours have been designed to include the best possible accommodations, services, local guides and sightseeing, deluxe transport, some if not all breakfasts and at least one other meal per day, as well as very “special” spa treatments for your well-being and relaxation so that you can better enjoy the tour.

New York Christmas Shopping
December 2 - 10, 2008
New York Pre-Christmas shopping, Broadway shows, Finger Lakes
New York is always “special” but come for the Pre-Christmas shopping and sales. Visit the city's many popular sites, go to a Broadway show, walk through some of the most “in” neighborhoods. Take a break from the fast-pace of NYC and spend a few days in the wine country of New York, the Finger Lakes area. Here you will relax, taste the wine and see the local crafts.
Stay in a hotel in the heart of Times Square, theater district and shopping paradise. Enjoy a sightseeing tour of the city including Ground Zero, Empire State Building, the United Nations, to name a few, winding up in one of New York’s most famous steakhouses.
Take a break from the city and experience the luxury of the 4-diamond Mirbeau Inn & Spa located in the New York state Finger Lakes wine country. Let your tensions melt away, relax and choose one of Mirbeau’s unique spa treatments for the mind and body.
The Finger Lakes area is New York's largest wine producing region, and the second largest in the US after the Napa Valley in California. You will visit one of the Finger Lake’s wineries for a taste and tour ending with a wine pairing dinner.
The Finger Lakes are a chain of lakes in the west-central section of Upstate New York that are a popular tourist destination. There are actually eleven lakes in the region, but only seven of the largest are commonly identified as the Finger Lakes.
Visit the storybook village of Skaneateles and step back in time to enjoy the holidays the old-fashioned way with a Dickens Christmas. Sing Christmas Carols, try roasted chestnuts, cider and donuts; listen to the brass band and bagpipers as they stroll the storied streets.
After being rejuvenated, we return to New York City for an full-immersion in NYC’s Christmas spirit attending the world renowned Radio City Christmas Show promising to be an unparalleled presentation by the famous Rocketts. Enjoy the Rockefeller Center Christmas tree while sipping cocktails at the Top of the Rock.
You’ll visit some of the most well-known NY museums, attend a Broadway show, and continue your Christmas shopping. The tour terminates with a surprise “splash”!
This deluxe 9 day, 8-night tour includes accommodation in deluxe hotels & resorts, 2 full breakfasts, 3 lunches, 2 dinners, 3 cocktail parties, 2 SPA treatments, the Radio City Christmas show, a Broadway show as well as all of the other wonderful sights and experiences we have planned for you. Assistance will be given throughout the tour by an excellent English-speaking tour escort.

December 5 - 10, 2008
Start your holiday shopping with a wonderful 6 day/5 night tour of Germany & Austria with special emphasis on their Christmas markets, classical concerts, cooking demonstrations, relaxing beauty treatments and much more!
We start our holiday journey in Munich with a festive welcome dinner after a brief orientation tour of the heart of Bavaria. Relax after dinner in our hotel to the melody of classical music.
We continue our trip by heading for Salzburg, birthplace of Mozart and one of the finest examples of Baroque architecture. Our visit would not be complete without an evening concert as well as a stroll through the colorful Christmas market. Participate in a cooking demonstration of a local holiday treat.

TURNIP PUFF : a Canadian Fall recipe easy & delicious
Submitted by one of our readers, Roseline Grech
INGREDIENTS
6 cups of hot mashed turnip
4 tablespoons of butter or margarine
2 teaspoons baking powder
1/4 teaspoons of pepper
6 tablespoons brown sugar
4 eggs, well beaten
1/2 teaspoon salt
bread crumbs
paprika
DIRECTIONS
Combine turnip, butter, eggs, brown sugar, baking powder, salt and pepper. Mix until thoroughly blended.
Turn into a buttered casserole dish. Top with a generous amount of soft buttered bread crumbs.
Sprinkle with paprika and bake at 350°F for 25 minutes or until lightly browned.
Serves 10 people
Can be made the day before and baked the next day.

The Turnip Puff can be paired with a variety of wines from around the world. A rich Pinot Gris fits the bill from Alsace or Oregon, or you may try a fruitier California wine like a “Santa Maria” Pinot Noir.
