Lisbon's superb natural setting, spread across seven hills and hugging the banks of the wide River Tagus estuary, attracted settlers as far back as 900BC, with the arrival of the Phoenicians. But its zenith was reached in the 14th and 15th centuries, when its explorers set out to investigate the world's oceans. Many of the city's grandest buildings, such as those along the waterfront in the suburb of Bélem, are legacies of those days. Twenty-first century Lisbon is a vibrant, cosmopolitan and creative city that has managed to successfully marry the historic with the modern, the traditional with the cutting edge. On our tour, we will have a "taste of the city" from top to bottom, on trams, ferry boats, trains, and of course on foot. Our hotel is situated just off the central Avenida da Liberdade and provides the perfect start for exploring the city. Some of the "special treats" will include an introduction course of the Portugese language, a ferry boat ride across the Tagus river, a cooking lesson with a spectacular view, a pottery lesson in the small village of Almocageme, wine & cheese tasting and several other "surprises". 
This 8 day/7 night tour starts in Lisbon and ends in Madeira. Our first 4 nights in the city of Lisbon and vicinity will be followed by a flight to Portugal's most beautiful island,the island of Madeira where we will spend the last 3 nights. Blessed with dramatic landscapes, it is called the "Pearl of the Atlantic". Known for its spectacular gardens and opulent flora, Madeira is often described as a "floating garden". Our Resort & Spa hotel is located in a luxurious retreat surrounded by Eucalyptus trees on a hill above the bustling port of Funchal. One of the highlights of our island stay include a Monte Toboggan ride in a special "basket" steered by skilled Madeirians down the hill. Put on your walking shoes, as we will be "hiking" up the mountains to have an astonishing view of the deep valleys and central mountains. All of this, of course, will be compensated by the relaxing moments at the hotel's Spa and pool and the delightful dinners at local restaurants.
