Gems of Portugal
October 10 - 16, 2010

Our new tour of Portugal takes us from Lisbon northward to Porto through history, culture, arts & crafts, and gastronomy. Get to know the local people. Listen to stories about their history and culture. Use your talents to make a small Arraiolos rug, and paint your own “azulejo” tile. Learn the characteristics of different local wines with the help of a wine expert. Visit some of the most spectacular and charming villages each with its own identity. Listen to the traditional “Fado” singers. Walk in the beautiful forest of Bussaco. Our tour begins in Lisbon and ends in Porto. The first three days will be spent in the legendary city of Lisbon with its seven hills. “Lisboa” is a city of contrasts: old quarters and ultra-modern zones, wide, tree-lined boulevards, and steep, narrow cobblestone streets. We will visit the city's principal attractions as well the "insiders" locations to get to know the city better.
On the fourth day we start our journey north stopping in the charming walled city of Obidos, perched on a hill, once a wedding gift of a king to his queen. We continue to Nazaré, the most famous fishing village in Portugal with its colorful wooden boats and to the ancient city of Coimbra, home of the renowned university.
“Last but not least”, we end our wonderful excursion in the town of “Oporto” or Porto, the country’s second largest city. Lining the Douro River, and renowned for its production of Porto wine, the city’s charm lies in its array of architectural gems from Roman, Gothic, Baroque, Neoclassic and renaissance eras.
