Oceanfront Villa on the Island of Pantelleria, Italy
An Oceanfront Villa facing a spectacular bay with a medieval flair in the island of Pantelleria, one of the most charming Mediterranean places, only 40 miles from the African shore. Pantelleria is a volcanic island, featuring hot water underwater springs, a lake in the mouth of a crater, active steam geysers, a beautiful coastline fragmented into thousands of coves, grottos and stone beaches, and a sequence of astonishing interior valleys cultivated with grapes and capers. The island is an amazing showcase of natural land art, sculpted by the winds and the sea, and of spectacular man-made vernacular architecture. The villa is a large residential complex resulting from the restoration and conversion of a group of “dammusi” (a local type of stone buildings), nested between Cala Tramontana and Cala Levante, the island’s most beautiful and accessible bays. The villa is also within walking distance of the “Elephant Trunk”, a spectacular natural arch and favorite swimming spot.
Ultimately, this complex is a sequence of stone buildings and patio gardens, animated by the play of the sunlight over the lava stone walls, the whistle of the sea breeze through the straw roofs of the patios, and the romantic charm of the gardens, punctuated of Bouganville and Jasmine flowers. Bernard Rudofsky, the author of “Architecture without Architects” has called this house “a special place where one savors the permanence of the stones, the healing powers of the winds and sea waves, the earthiness of the primitive landscape, the energy of the island’s volcanos, and the magic of the falling stars”.
This Oceanfront Villa features seven rooms and five bathrooms in three separate residences: A, B and C. The three residences are grouped around a central open space functioning as a private “piazza”, and providing access to the kitchen, a wood-fire stone oven, and various terraces and patio-gardens. Residences A and B: include two bedrooms and one bath each, while Residence C, a former winery converted to residential use, houses three bedrooms, three baths, a small kitchen, and a large multi-level loft space serving as art studio, living and dining area. The Oceanfront Villa is available from May to October and the minimum stay is one week (usually from Sunday to Sunday).
In May and June, Pantelleria is sunny and green, and its landscape is sprinkled with multi-colored flowers. This is a great time to walk the internal valleys and discover the island without outsiders. In July and, particularly, in August, the island becomes very popular, the sea is warm, falling stars strike the sky, and the island is alive and kicking. In September and October the sea remains warm and pleasant to swim, while the island returns calm and pastoral. This is wine-making season, and the local wineries allow visitors to taste their products.
During May, June, part of July, September and October, it is possible to rent any of the three residences, while during July and August the entire Oceanfront Villa is rented as one entity to large families or groups of friends numbering 6 to 14 guests. The villa is furnished and equipped, and linen is included.
